Flora and Fauna
Since freshwater biomes are found in many places of the earth, it only makes sense if there is a large range of fauna found there. Insects are a very common sighting, especially mosquitoes, black flies, ticks, leeches, chiggers,
and the occasional dragonfly or butterfly. Fish are also a prominent species found in freshwater biomes. Trout, salmon, and bass rule the lakes and streams. A few species of aquatic mammals accompany the fish. In warmer regions, manatees are commonly sighted, while in colder regions a beaver or otter is not an uncommon sighting. Turtles, freshwater crocodiles, and even alligators are commonly spotted in freshwater biomes. Amphibians thrive in the wet environments, and a few species of birds also fare well. Ducks, geese, and swans are some of the common residents, while the rarer heron or crane makes an occasional appearance.
The flora of this region also varies greatly. Most of the plants float on the surface of a lake or stream, while some attach themselves to underwater rocks, or even the wet sand. Cattails and watercress grow on the muddy banks, but because of their strong roots, are not washed away by the current of the body of water. Water lilies are one of the species of plants that float on the surface of the water and mangrove trees grow near to the water, along with spike rushes and bull rushes.
